Colloquia Presents ‘Lorna Moore. Becoming Shadow’

Three looping video channels and one continuous soundtrack transform the gallery into a spatial study of memory, shadow, and bodily presence.

WOODSTOCK, VA, UNITED STATES, August 10, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Colloquia will present Lorna Moore: Becoming Shadow, a three-wall video and sound installation opening Saturday, September 12, 2026, at its public gallery in Woodstock, Virginia. The opening reception will take place from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., with the artist in attendance.

Moore is a Liverpool-based video performance artist, researcher, and educator whose practice crosses video, photography, sound, telematics, interactive media, performance, and embodied research. In Becoming Shadow, she brings three distinct high-definition video channels into continuous relation across three gallery walls. One soundtrack creates a shared sound field throughout the room.

Working through performance for the camera and stop-motion sequences assembled from still photographs of her own body, Moore constructs movement that remains visibly discontinuous. The figure hesitates, repeats, fragments, disappears, and reforms. The shadow operates as a second presence, familiar yet separate, carrying traces of past experience into the present without resolving into a simple symbol or narrative.

The installation cannot be taken in from a single position. Viewers turn among the projected fields, attending to one image while the other two continue beyond their immediate line of sight. As visitors move through the room, they may cross the light and cast their own shadows into the work. The relationship among artist, image, architecture, sound, and audience therefore remains active throughout the encounter.

“Becoming Shadow uses technology with considerable restraint,” said Andrew Ritcheson, managing partner of Colloquia. “The three visual channels divide attention while the soundtrack holds the room together. The work asks viewers to accept partial knowledge and remain present as meaning develops through recurrence, sound, and movement.”

Published ahead of the exhibition, Colloquia’s new essay When the Image Takes Time considers the wider contemporary-art questions raised by time-based media. The essay examines duration, recurrence, incomplete viewing, sound, and the gallery’s responsibility to create conditions in which an artwork can unfold rather than compete for immediate attention. It stands independently of the exhibition while establishing an intellectual context for encountering Moore’s work.
