A Thought Provoking New Book Examines Pakistan’s Crisis From Within

Many of us only perceive Pakistan as a third-world country, with political instability being the most serious concern. But Culprits in the Mind: (Perspectives on Pakistan) by Imran Khalid Usman offers a timely and deeply reflective examination of Pakistan’s enduring political and social instability by shifting the conversation away from familiar blame narratives and toward internal causes rooted in mindset and collective behavior.

Rather than presenting another critique of corruption or leadership failure, the book explores a less discussed but critical phenomenon. It asks why segments of society expected to uphold democracy, humanism, and tolerance have historically supported authoritarian rule, religious fundamentalism, and repeated disruptions of democratic continuity. Through this lens, the book challenges widely held assumptions about progress, education, and political awareness.

Drawing on socio-psychological insight, historical context, and comparative global observations, Imran Khalid Usman argues that national outcomes are shaped as much by cultural conditioning and inherited thinking as by formal institutions. He examines how identity, insecurity, and unresolved historical narratives influence public behavior and political choices, often undermining reform efforts from within.

While acknowledging Pakistan’s achievements and the resilience of its people, Culprits in the Mind seeks to understand why the country remains caught in cycles of internal turmoil that project an image of instability. The book emphasizes that without honest self reflection, structural reforms remain fragile and reversible.

Extending beyond Pakistan, the book also reflects on the erosion of democratic and humanistic values in Western societies, particularly in their responses to cultural diversity and immigration. This comparative perspective places Pakistan’s challenges within a broader global context, reinforcing the idea that the struggle between fear and tolerance is not confined to any single society.

Distinct from purely academic studies, Culprits in the Mind offers an original discourse that highlights psychological and social nuances often overlooked or considered politically uncomfortable. It is written for readers who seek clarity rather than slogans and understanding rather than outrage.

In short, Culprits in the Mind is an invitation to rethink national failure not as an external imposition, but as a consequence of internal narratives that can be questioned, challenged, and ultimately reformed.

About the Author:

Imran Khalid Usman is a civil engineer by profession and was politically active during the period of General Zia ul Haq’s military rule in Pakistan. During that time, he was associated with the now defunct Pakistan Socialist Party led by C R Aslam and remained involved until the early 1990s. He holds a favorable view of Mikhail Gorbachev’s reformist policies in the final years of the Soviet Union, while rejecting the notion that its dissolution was an inevitable historical outcome. At the same time, he firmly regards communism and socialism as obsolete systems in the context of the modern world.
